The booming growth of the World Wide Web has made more and more information available digitally at unprecedented rates and levels of popularity. Also, the Web itself can be considered unprecedented in the almost complete lack of coordination in its creation and in the diversity of backgrounds and motives of its participants. Each of these contributes in making exploratory data analysis hard. In particular, we will focus on one of the steps in exploratory data analysis that is the clustering phase. Clustering is the unsupervised classification of patterns into groups (clusters). In this book, we provide useful advice and references to fundamental concepts accessible to the broad community of clustering practitioners. We describe three important applications of clustering algorithms in Information Retrieval: (1) Similarity Search for High Dimensional Data Points, with the purpose to find Near Duplicate Images, (2) Measuring Latent Variable in Social Sciences, with the aim to visualize Research Communities, and (3) Generative Model for Content Analysis of Natural Language Documents to detect Events.

This year the CDVE conference celebratedits fourth annual eventin an exciting city—Shanghai, China. The cooperative design, visualization and engineering communitysensedtheeconomicpulseofanewgianteconomywherecooperation is vital for its success. This year we received a large number of papers from all over the world. In addition to many submissions from Europe, we received more papers from Asia and China this time. Many authors from key Chinese research centers and national projects presented their papers, which gave us insight into the progress of research and development in this giant economy. From a technical point of view, as a major trend in cooperative design, vi- alization, engineering and other applications, advanced Web-based cooperation technology stands out by itself. Many papers re?ect the research in this aspect with very convincing results. Web-based cooperative working applications have been emerging strongly since the wide availability and accessibility of the WWW. It is a form of sharing andcollaboratingbyitsnature.Itissuitable forthe cooperationofamuchwider range of users. In the ?eld of cooperative engineering, new ?ndings and new results were presented. Among all, work ?ow technology was recognized as a key element for successful cooperative engineering. According to these new ?ndings, only Web-based cooperation tools and shared databases are not enough for coop- ative engineering. Work?ow-based methodology should be introduced to gu- antee the integration and coordination of the whole life cycle process of products.

The last decade has seen tremendous growth in usage of the World Wide Web. Web caching is a technology aimed at reducing the transmission of redundant network traffic and improving access to the Web. The key idea in Web caching is to cache frequently- accessed content so that it may be used profitably later. This leads to cost savings, reduction in network traffic, improved access and better content availability. Web Caching and Its Applications gives the reader an understanding of the latest developments in Web caching research. Topics covered include architectural aspects, aspects requiring coordination among caches, aspects related to network traffic, techniques that complement caching, practical aspects, and aspects related to performance. While Web Caching and Its Applications is designed for a professional audience, students will appreciate the exercises for applying the knowledge to solving practical problems related to Web caching and Internet performance. The book includes an exhaustive list of references for further study.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th European Workshop on Modelling Autonomous Agents in a Multi-Agent World, MAAMAW '96, held in Eindhoven, The Netherlands in January 1996. The concept of agents comprises physical as well as software agents; it emerged at the crossroads of distributed computing, artificial intelligence, and embedded systems. Multi-agent systems are foundational for new models of computing and interaction addressing large-scale open distributed platforms like the World-Wide Web. The 17 revised full papers presented were selected from a total of 51 submissions; they are organized in sections on epistemological and ontological issues, frameworks and architectures, interaction and coordination, emergence, and task-specific analysis.

The two volumes of Reader's Choice 4, Split Editions, contain all the high-quality reading skills and strategies in the fourth edition of Reader's Choice. Reader's Choice is based on the theory that proficient reading requires the coordination of a number of skills, but most important, the reader's ability to select the proper skills or strategies to solve each reading problem. The exercises and readings in the new split editions of Reader's Choice will help students become independent, efficient readers. Each carefully selected reading is accompanied by a wide variety of exercises, including a composition focus to facilitate use of the text in integrated reading-writing programs. Skills-focused units alternate with units centering on full reading passages. New in the split editions: 'Visual literacy. Today's students are confronted with a dizzying array and combination of print and graphics. These editions feature activities that develop strategies for gleaning information from combinations of text and graphics. 'Web work. The ability of today's students to evaluate information sources is nowhere more crucial than on the Internet. Web work appears in two skills units in book 1, and other activities accompany several reading selections. 'New readings. The changing world around us has led to the addition of readings on topics such as genetic engineering, the globalization of tourism, and the cross-generational workplace. 'Additional vocabulary. New readings bring additional vocabulary. New lexical items are topically related across a series of linked readings. Items are introduced and practiced in a variety of formats, reinforcing both the given item and more generalliteracy and acquisitions skills. Book 1 includes units 1-6 and unit 13 from the single volume of the fourth edition. Book 2 includes units 7-12 and unit 14 from the single volume of the fourth edition. Both volumes include an extensive lesson plan and guide for te
